Episode Overview

Joe Rogan sits down with UFC bantamweight Ethyn Ewing, immediately recognizing his unique "Professor Fennesser" fighting style. Ewing, a product of rigorous training and a deep understanding of martial arts philosophy, reflects on his explosive UFC debut against Malcolm Wellmaker, a fight he took on two days' notice and above his weight class. He emphasizes the critical importance of technique, finesse, and striking without taking damage, advocating for longevity over crowd-pleasing brawling. This approach, he explains, is "a smart man's game," contrasting it with the more aggressive, short-lived careers of many fighters who succumb to the "trap" of audience cheers for chaotic exchanges. The conversation delves into the evolution of combat sports, from classic boxing and Muay Thai artistry—with figures like Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya highlighted for their exceptional skill—to modern MMA. Ewing shares insights into the rigorous physical and mental demands of fighting, including the constant work-in-progress nature of skill development and the necessity of "killing the ego" in training to address weaknesses. He recounts his own journey of overcoming early professional losses and personal struggles, which forced a complete lifestyle overhaul and ultimately shaped him into the disciplined athlete he is today. Ewing also discusses the importance of mental fortitude in the cage, citing examples of fighters who let external pressures or anger compromise their performance.

It's the mantra that it brings to the fight game and to who I am is perfect. Well, it's finesse, and you fight with a lot of finesse. So we should start from your UFC debut because that was when you really burst onto the scene. You fought this guy, Malcolm Wellmaker, who's a killer, vicious knockout puncher, and had a ton of hype behind him because of his performance. Was it the Contender Series We had the big performance? It was all three of them Yeah [00:01:17] And nobody had heard of you And that's one of the craziest things About this sport Is that there can be a guy like you That's learning and growing In the shadows And then they get the call And on I think it was [00:01:29] Two Days notice Yeah So two days notice you fought above your weight because you're abandoned weight normally and you fought a feather weight. And dude, you just, it wasn't just that you fought a guy who was this vicious striker. It was the calmness and the technique and the smoothness of it all that was so impressive. And I was like, this guy's different. Like the way you fight is very intelligent. And I love that. [00:02:31] it's like you said I like to fight with finesse I like to hit and not get hit and champions don't take return fire so I hope to have a lot of longevity with this game and yeah that's why I fight that way that is the formula for longevity I was having a conversation with Fador the guy who's sitting n...
