Episode Overview

Motown and pop legend Lionel Richie joins Joe for a warm, far-ranging conversation about the golden era of American music, the nature of genuine artistic gifts, and life inside one of music history's most extraordinary runs. Richie reflects on divine guidance or sheer luck keeping him safe through the chaos of the music industry's wildest years, and on how the best thing anyone ever did for him was not tell him he wasn't college material — it left his creative instincts undamaged. He talks about the hit records he couldn't have planned or rehearsed, the street origins of Motown sound and the industry's effort to legitimize and homogenize it, and what it means to be Mr. Showbiz while carrying enormous personal trauma — describing someone who was so loved by the public but was privately carrying so much. The conversation moves through the era of major label consolidation — Motown, A&M, Mercury, and Polygram all folding into one giant entity — and how that changed what music could be. The early 1970s, the acid tab culture of the era, and friend Blair Underwood all get their moments.
