Episode Overview

Joe Rogan sits down with UFC welterweight contender Daniel "D-Rod" Rodriguez to discuss his harrowing eight-month incarceration in a Mexican prison. Rodriguez details the shocking circumstances of his arrest in Tijuana for possession of a small amount of cannabis, a substance he mistakenly believed was decriminalized for tourists. He describes the harsh realities of the Mexican judicial system, where corruption is rampant, and he faced a potential six-year sentence. Rodriguez shares how he navigated this foreign and dangerous environment, using his street smarts and fighting experience to survive, including forming an unlikely alliance with a cartel leader. Rodriguez recounts the extreme conditions of his confinement, from overcrowded cells infested with bugs to a diet of junk food that led to severe malnutrition. He vividly describes transforming his cell into a makeshift gym, using improvised equipment and the limited yard time to maintain his physical and mental fortitude, even training an inmate with boxing experience. Despite the grim circumstances, Rodriguez reflects on how this challenging experience fueled his determination, making him appreciate his freedom and career more than ever. The conversation shifts to Rodriguez's remarkable comeback, including his new UFC contract and upcoming main event fight in Serbia against Miroslav Medić. He expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to tell his story and highlights the mental resilience gained from his past, contrasting the controlled environment of the octagon with the life-threatening situations he's faced. Rodriguez also shares his late entry into MMA, his background in street fighting, and his current training regimen, including utilizing the UFC Performance Institute, as he prepares for what he calls the biggest fight of his life.
