Episode Overview

Siddharth Kara sheds light on the harrowing realities behind cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a critical component in batteries for smartphones and electric vehicles. He describes the brutal conditions endured by miners, including children, who work without safety equipment, often risking their lives for mere dollars a day. Kara emphasizes that despite widespread awareness, major tech and automotive companies continue to source cobalt from these exploitative environments, driven by soaring demand projected to increase several hundred percent in the coming decades. Kara recounts his firsthand experiences navigating dangerous mining sites guarded by armed militias, highlighting the lack of meaningful corporate accountability and government oversight. He draws parallels to historical exploitation, referencing Joseph Conrad’s *Heart of Darkness*, and stresses the urgent need for transparency and ethical responsibility in global supply chains. Beyond human rights abuses, Kara also touches on the environmental devastation caused by mining and the systemic economic forces that perpetuate this cycle of suffering. Throughout the conversation, Kara calls for a collective reckoning with the true cost of modern technology, urging consumers and corporations alike to confront the “blood for cobalt” economy. He advocates for shining a light on these hidden injustices to inspire change, stressing that technological innovation alone won’t solve the problem without a fundamental shift in values and accountability.
