Episode Overview

A physicist and aerospace researcher who has spent over two decades obsessing over advanced power and propulsion joins Joe for a conversation that starts with the Air and Space Smithsonian and ends at the frontier of consciousness science. Inspired since childhood by the Bell X-1 and the Wright Flyer — and by the staggering fact that humanity went from first flight to landing on the Moon in under 70 years — the guest channeled that wonder into a career working on concepts like space warps and next-generation propulsion systems. Joe is immediately hooked: what would it look like if that same 70-year acceleration applied to propulsion? They cover the gap between current physics and what theoretical work suggests might be possible, how the field bridges into consciousness research (the frontier territory Joe says he's been obsessed with his whole life), and why the next visit should include people exploring consciousness together.

Starting point is 00:00:11 My pleasure. Well, as soon as I saw the subject, I was like, oh yeah, like, what are you doing? Right, right, right. Advanced power and propulsion. Kind of been a passion of mine for the last 20 some odd years. I suppose that's the way it is. I mean, I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. Starting point is 00:00:21 I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion. I'm not a big fan of the power and propulsion.? Right, right, right. Advanced power and propulsion. Kind of been a passion of mine for the last 20-some odd years. I suppose if I kind of look back through the annals of my life, right, I've been thinking about advanced power and propulsion ever since I was a teenager. What do you think inspired that? Was it space missions? Did you look at it and go, I think we can do better. Like what was it? Starting point is 00:00:45 Well, you know, I grew up in Washington, DC, and so I got a chance to spend a lot of time in the Air and Space Smithsonian. I don't know if you've ever had a chance to go to that. But growing up in DC, getting a chance to go to the Air and Space Smithsonian, I got to see all these awesome examples of people working together to try and accomplish amazing things, right? And, you know, you might walk into the Air and Space Smithsonian, you just think about, wow, this is full of a bunch of stuff. But it's not just about the stuff, right? It's about the people that worked together to do...
