Episode Overview

Palmer Luckey — founder of Oculus VR and defense technology company Anduril Industries — joins Joe for a sprawling conversation about AI, weapons, national security, and the future of warfare. Luckey shares his Terminator head canon: the reason Skynet didn't just win immediately is a feature, not a bug, of how these systems would actually work. He gets into the policy debate over whether national security AI programs should be in private or government hands, and the oversight problem that arises with both. A thread on supersonic travel covers the physics of why a champagne glass doesn't tip on a fast enough aircraft (the acceleration profile). Luckey discusses Silicon Valley's libertarian instincts around government content moderation, early gaming nostalgia (Nintendo Gameboy), sleep science and people who genuinely need only a few hours, and the media circus that formed around something that started as real. As a self-described weapons enthusiast with approximately 450 firearms, he closes the episode walking through armor plate placement and the tactical tradeoffs between front and rear protection.

Starting point is 00:00:59 computing rig and they want to just they want to program while they're floating in space and he hasn't he hasn't gotten all the way there yet the hardest part has actually been the mouse there's lots of waterproof keyboards for various industrial applications like you know so you don't get metal shavings in on and oil in them Starting point is 00:01:14 but mice it's actually it's actually harder but that makes sense because there's a well it's a laser now used to be an actual ball that would have been really hard yeah at this point I don't think it's that hard I think he's been he's been screwing around with just taking a normal one and then wrapping it in saran wrap. Starting point is 00:01:32 But that's kind of splash-proof, but not immersion-proof. Is he actually underwater with the setup? Yeah, because if you're taking your hands up out of the water, one, it's uncomfortable. So he's floating like this and the keyboard. Underwater. Yeah, exactly. So you're f...
