Episode Overview

Joe Rogan opens the podcast with Joe DeRosa discussing various methods for brewing coffee, from individual tea dippers to French presses. They delve into the pros and cons of each, with Joe Rogan advocating for the French press due to its ability to preserve bean oils and avoid hot plastic exposure, while DeRosa favors the AeroPress for its speed and convenience. The conversation humorously highlights DeRosa's self-proclaimed "laziness" in morning coffee preparation versus his willingness to cook elaborate dishes like Alton Brown's foamy eggs. This leads into a broader discussion about the perceived value of effort and the stark contrast between historical hardships and modern conveniences. The conversation pivots to their favorite Austin restaurants, with Rogan praising Jeffries as the best steakhouse and mentioning Red Ash for its steak and Italian options. This transitions into a debate about the internet's role in finding good food versus relying on word-of-mouth recommendations, emphasizing the challenge of distinguishing authentic quality from paid publicity. The discussion then takes a more philosophical turn, exploring the idea of financial stability, the importance of gratitude, and whether growing up poor instills necessary drive or if a society without such struggle would be superior. They consider the effects of wealth on individuals, referencing "nepo babies" like Eden Brolin who still pursue their own careers, and the grounded nature of certain celebrities like Woody Harrelson and Billy Bob Thornton. Later, Rogan recounts his early career in Taekwondo, admitting to suffering brain damage before transitioning into stand-up comedy, which he found "easy as fuck" compared to fighting. They discuss the entertainment industry's landscape, touching on classic TV shows like "Hogan's Heroes" and "The Honeymooners," and the changing dynamics of Hollywood versus the independent success found in comedy and podcasting. The episode concludes with DeRosa promoting his Netflix special "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and his new podcast "Violent Horrendous."

I went through a whole, like a series of different coffee machines that I tried out. I tried out one of them that was like this little thing that's like a tea dipper almost, like for an individual cup of coffee. You put the grounds in this little thing. [00:01:16] So then I went to an arrow press. I like that one a lot. What's an arrow press? I use that every day. So with an arrow press, I boil the water, grind the beans. And then I pour it into this glass tube. And the glass tube is a filter at the bottom of it, like in a mesh, like a steel or an aluminum. It's some kind of metal mesh. [00:01:38] And then that's what it looks like. And so you press down and it makes a cup of coffee real quick. And it's one cup. And so that's what I like.
