Episode Overview

Joe Rogan and author Rowan Jacobsen delve into the nuanced and often misunderstood relationship between humans and sunlight. Jacobsen, whose latest book *In Defense of Sunlight* challenges conventional wisdom, shares how his initial perception of sun exposure as primarily harmful shifted dramatically through years of research. They explore why institutions have historically oversimplified public health messaging, often overlooking the sun's profound benefits in favor of an exclusive focus on skin cancer prevention. Jacobsen details key findings that changed his perspective, including studies showing sunlight triggers opiate release in the brain, improves cognition and metabolism, and can lower blood pressure. He argues that the historical understanding of sun exposure is heavily skewed by early discoveries that linked UV light to DNA damage and skin cancer, without fully accounting for vitamin D production (discovered in the 1920s) and other systemic benefits. The discussion highlights the dangers of severe sunburns, particularly in childhood, as a primary driver of melanoma risk, while noting that moderate, consistent sun exposure actually reduces the risk for outdoor workers compared to office workers. The conversation also touches on controversial topics, such as the ineffectiveness of vitamin D supplementation compared to natural sun exposure, the surprising benefits of coffee, and the potential risks of certain chemical sunscreens. Jacobsen reveals how his work has faced pushback from organizations like the American Academy of Dermatology, which advocates for total sun avoidance, despite growing interdisciplinary evidence of sunlight's holistic health advantages. They conclude by emphasizing the importance of light as a fundamental dietary component and the need for a more nuanced, individualized approach to sun exposure recommendations, acknowledging distinct differences across skin types and environments.

About Rowan Jacobsen

Rowan Jacobsen is an author and researcher known for challenging conventional health wisdom through rigorous investigation. His latest book, In Defense of Sunlight, presents evidence that moderate sun exposure provides significant health benefits including vitamin D production, improved cognition, better metabolism, and opiate release in the brain, arguing that public health messaging has oversimplified sun exposure as purely harmful. Jacobsen's work reshapes how we understand sunlight's role as a fundamental health component, despite pushback from dermatological institutions.

[00:00:01] Joe Rogan podcast, checking out. The Joe Rogan Experience. Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day. All right. Very nice to meet you, man. You too. Thanks for having you. And thanks for doing this work because you want to talk about a subject that's confused so many people. [00:00:21] Is the sun good for you? Is the son killing you? Why does it give you vitamin D if it's bad for you? Why do people get skin cancer if it's good for you? Yeah, it's super complicated. and the messaging has not sort of admitted that, and that was, yeah, a big impetus for the book. What was your opinion of sun exposure [00:00:41] before you started writing this? So I had inherited the conventional wisdom from the institutions that it was really bad. At the same time, I'll admit that my instincts were that maybe it wasn't as bad as they were leading me to believe because whenever I was in the sun, I felt good. and I live in Vermont. [00:01:21] Like, it feels great when you're in the sun. Like, ah, it's like your body wants it. Your body wants it. I mean, we now know that it literally triggers the release of opiates in the brain. sunlight. So yeah, your body wants it and your body rewards you when you get it. So what is the issue? Well, let's go back to the beginning. So you had this idea that sun exposure is probably giving people cancer and sunscreen is good. You need to wear sunscreen, stay out of the suns. So when you started going into the research, what made you shift your [00:01:50] opinion? So it really started for me like seven or eight years ago. I was on this like science journalism fellowship. So I was just doing research. And some of those studies hit. the one about opiate release in the brain, other studies showing that when light hits skin, cognition actually improves. Like your metabolism cranks up a little bit when the body feels sunlight coming in. And I thought, that's interesting. That's all good stuff. Then I came across a couple other studies t...
