Episode Overview

Joe Rogan welcomes Travis Barker, discussing his recently released documentary and the intensely personal story behind it. The conversation immediately dives into the traumatic 2008 plane crash Barker survived, which claimed the lives of four others and left him with severe burns and profound survivor's guilt. For two decades following the crash, Barker refused to fly, detailing the logistical nightmares of touring by bus and boat—including harrowing transatlantic crossings on the Queen Mary 2, complete with a morgue and jail, to reach England. He recounts how his decision to fly again, documented for his film, was driven by a desire to overcome this deep-seated fear and show his children that they too could break free from the trauma the accident had instilled. Barker reflects on the 30 surgeries he endured and his subsequent journey to sobriety, describing the burn center as his "rehab." He shares a poignant encounter with a fellow plane crash survivor with similar injuries and loss, highlighting the rare camaraderie they found. The conversation shifts to the broader themes of discipline and obsession, with Barker attributing his success as a drummer to relentless practice and dedication, instilled by strict parents. He advocates for finding a passion and pursuing it with unwavering commitment, emphasizing the importance of resilience in overcoming life's challenges. The discussion also touches on the unique physical demands of drumming, the benefits of martial arts for mental clarity and humility, and the critical role of environment and peer influence in personal growth.
