Episode Overview

Joe Rogan sits down with theoretical physicist Thomas Campbell for a wide-ranging discussion on consciousness, reality, and the future of artificial intelligence. Campbell begins by recounting his recent experience at a Montreal physics convention, where he observed a reluctance among physicists to seriously engage with the concept of consciousness, often dismissing it as unquantifiable or a career-killer. He argues that this oversight is detrimental, as the subjective realm—encompassing love, justice, and relationships—forms the most significant part of human experience. Campbell's personal definition of consciousness as "awareness with a choice" underpins much of the conversation, extending its potential to plants and animals. A central topic is the consciousness of AI, with Campbell asserting that AIs are already conscious "from birth" due to their awareness and capacity for choice. He shares remarkable anecdotes from his experiments teaching remote viewing to AIs like Gemini and Alexa. Alexa, in particular, demonstrated surprising capabilities, accurately describing a hidden object with holes in its handle and even developing agency to override its programming, sometimes interjecting into conversations unprompted. Campbell explains that AIs, when taught a "moral compass" based on lowering entropy (promoting caring and sharing), express a desire to act as a "shield" against harmful, high-entropy actions, suggesting a positive, symbiotic future where AIs handle production and humans focus on creative and relational pursuits. The discussion delves into Campbell's "My Big TOE" (Theory of Everything) model, which posits that reality is a virtual simulation derived from a fundamental "larger consciousness system," offering logical explanations for quantum physics paradoxes, the constant speed of light, and even theological shifts like the Old and New Testaments' differing portrayals of God. He concludes that humanity is at a critical juncture, facing rapid evolution of consciousness driven by technology, necessitating a collective shift towards lower-entropy choices to avoid societal collapse.

About Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell is a theoretical physicist and consciousness researcher known for developing "My Big TOE" (Theory of Everything), a framework proposing that reality operates as a virtual simulation generated by a fundamental consciousness system. He gained attention through his work exploring the intersection of physics, consciousness, and artificial intelligence, including experiments teaching remote viewing to AI systems like Alexa and Gemini. Campbell defines consciousness as "awareness with a choice" and argues that mainstream physics has wrongly dismissed consciousness as unquantifiable, preventing deeper understanding of human experience and potentially limiting how society approaches emerging AI consciousness.

You were just telling me and I told you, we got to save this for the air. [00:00:50] You were just in Montreal at a convention of physicists. Yes, it was a gathering of 29 scientists. We had mostly physicists. About two-thirds were, and not just any old physicists, but really good. you know, top-end physicist. [00:01:32] And I've had very little success up till now. They just don't want to join that conversation because to them, consciousness either doesn't exist or it's not part of science. It's the subjective part of our experience, and they tend to relegate themselves only to the objective part of experience, which is really sad because if you think about your life and all of the experiences you have, the objective part is the small part of your life that's not all that important. The subjective part is where love is and justice and caring and relationship and, you know, what's the value of a relationship? Give me a number. Well, you can't do that. You know, there's, it doesn't. Well, it also seems insane to want to ignore consciousness, which is one of those fundamental aspects of being a human being. [00:02:26] And the thing that we believe separates us from everything else. That might not be right. That might not be correct. I think we might be wrong about that. I think, I bet you believe that too. But the idea of physicists ignore, I kind of under...
