Episode Overview

Joe Rogan welcomes old friend Steve Hilton, currently running for governor of California, to discuss the state's deep-seated political and economic issues. Their conversation, spanning topics from social media’s impact to California’s infrastructure and housing crises, reveals a shared frustration with government inefficiency and alleged corruption. Hilton, known for his straight-talking approach, provides an inside look at the challenges of running for office as an outsider. A central theme of the discussion is California's "doom loop" – a cycle where rising costs and taxes lead to more welfare programs, which in turn drive up expenses further. Hilton highlights exorbitant gas prices, the failing high-speed rail project, and the homeless crisis as prime examples of government overreach and mismanagement. He argues that the state’s one-party rule has fostered an environment where practical solutions are overshadowed by ideology, leading to policies that harm ordinary working people while benefiting crony businesses and non-profits. The conversation also touches on the pervasive influence of social media and technology. Both Joe and Hilton express concerns about the addictive nature of platforms like TikTok and Instagram, particularly for children, but caution against government intervention in product design. Hilton shares his own experience navigating online abuse and the challenge of discerning real opinions from bot activity. Ultimately, Hilton emphasizes the need for transparency, accountability, and common sense in governance, believing that widespread public dissatisfaction can overcome the entrenched political machine in California.
