Episode Overview

Dan Doty, wilderness guide and founder of the Evryman men's wellness movement, joins Joe for a heartfelt two-hour conversation about men, meaning, and nature. Doty describes leading young men on wilderness rites-of-passage experiences in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, where simply showing up and being present can transform troubled young people in ways that conventional therapy cannot. They discuss hunting and eating whole animals — liver, heart, everything — as a form of genuine engagement with life and death, debate the opioid crisis and the failure of medical paternalism, and reflect on the tension between taking action and accepting what cannot be changed. Doty also shares his transition from the wilderness world into podcasting with the Evryman Podcast, bringing the same ethos of honest, vulnerable masculinity to a digital audience.
